Otherplace was part of a research project I was working with, revolving around culture as a forth dimension for sustainable urban development.
Otherplace aimed to explore the boundaries between fiction and reality, the playful and the serious. Games have the ability to engage us in conceptual worlds that exist in parallell, and at times seem to expand beyond reality. Play can disrupt our every day activities, offer us alternatives to the filters with which we comprehend our realities and let us see old places in a new light.
The project involved workshops, collaborations with local game culture representatives, different parts of Malmö stad, a performance held at the Malmö festival, and ended with an experimental game and play event that was held in Norra Sorgenfri, Malmö, at the 18th of august 2014. The goal with the Otherplace event was to allow the local creative activities to be mirrored out in the streets, and to have Malmö citizens take space in the public room.
At the event participants were able to experience urban play in the old industrial area, participate in experimental and playful interaction in the gallery, create simple games and controls in the DIY spot, enjoy illustrated art and play games centered around food, to mentioned some of the activities.
Otherplace was a project that aimed to explore and experiment with play and games in urban settings. Games have the ability to engage us in conceptual worlds that exist in parallell with and sometimes even seem to go beyond and expand reality. Play can disrupt our everyday filters through which we construct meaning of the world around us, and allow us to see familiar places in a new light.
Games constrict and allow for specific actions, and through play we can bend both explicit and implicit rules to make up and collectively engage in ideational, alternate realities. In play we are free to act from internal pleasure and joy, without having to think about making ourselves productive.

The video above is a summary, and does not cover the whole project since it was mainly targeted towards Malmö stad.
